Can Natural Nutrients Prevent Cancer and Its Recurrence? Tame the Volcano of Inflammation with Phytonutrients

Dr. Zhaoping Li

Cancer is a chronic disease of the genome that may be influenced at many stages in its natural history by nutritional factors that could impact both the prevention and treatment of cancer. The evidence that cancer is the result of a genetic-environmental interaction is drawn both from studies of human populations and from animal experiments. Also, a strong association of common forms of cancer with diet and life-style suggests that primary prevention of cancer may be possible, and large clinical trials are examining this possibility. It is now appreciated that the process of cancer progression and metastasis may also be modifiable through nutritional intervention. Practical advice is also given for patients and their family members who are currently facing a cancer diagnosis, treatment, recovery or for those interested in learning more about cancer prevention. Also addressed are life style issues related to exercise and its interactive benefits with nutrition.

Dr. Zhaoping Li is a Professor of Clinical Medicine and the Associate Chief of the Division of Clinical Nutrition at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA. Dr. Li’s primary areas of interest are in nutrition and cancer, and the role of phytochemicals and botanical dietary supplements in the prevention and treatment of common forms of cancer. She has been working in the UCLA Center for Human Nutrition since 1998. She has served as the Associate Chief for the Division of Clinical Nutrition and the Director for the Clinical Research Unit. Dr. Li has published research dietary interventions in cancer on the use of botanical supplements including soy, Chinese red yeast rice, green tea, pomegranate etc. She is an author and a co-author of 25 papers and abstracts. Dr. Li has also served as principal and co-principal investigator for over 15 clinical trials.
