Face Off With Cancer Hockey Tournament

FOWC_Carolyn - CopyOn Saturday, June 20th, Face Off With Cancer hosted a special 3-on-3 tournament and skills challenge to raise money and awareness for the cancer community. On top of holding this fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, money was given to members of the Southern California hockey community that have been affected by cancer.

Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology was chosen as a beneficiary of this wonderful event after being nominated by Reiko Han, who has benefited from services provided at the Center and is also involved with Face Off With Cancer. “It was my pleasure. I nominated Simms/Mann because I’ve been part of a support group, which helped me a lot,” said Reiko. She had been overwhelmed by meeting back to back with four specialists, but then met Suzanne Levanas, LCSW, who introduced her to the Center. Suzanne currently facilitates the Simms/Mann breast cancer support group which meets in Santa Monica. Reiko explained, “Suzanne was an excellent facilitator and helped to build a great support network. Even after we completed active treatments and ‘graduated’ from the weekly support group, we still keep in touch.”

Growing popularity of hockey
The number of registered amateur hockey players in the US has grown 166% over the last 25 years (from 195,125 players in the 1990-91 season to 519,417 in the 2013-14 season.

As a beneficiary of the Face Off With Cancer hockey event, the Simms/Mann Center received a $5,000 grant to help provide free psycho-social support to cancer patients and family members. The generous donation from the hockey participants and community is truly appreciated.  The Center is fully donor funded so every donation helps to provide valuable services, free of charge to cancer patients, their family members, and care givers.

Special thank you once again to Reiko Han and Face Off With Cancer for this wonderful opportunity! Congratulations on your 4th year of holding this event. We wish you many years of success in providing support to members of the hockey community affected by cancer and look forward to hearing more about the great work you will be doing in the future.

Hmm it appears like your blog ate my first comment (it was extremely long)
so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I submitted and say,
I’m thoroughly enjoying your blog. I as well am
an aspiring blog blogger but I’m still new to everything.
Do you have any points for first-time blog writers? I’d genuinely appreciate it.
