Facilitator Spotlight: Kathryn de Planque
This month we are spotlighting Kathryn de Planque, the facilitator for our Mediation: Guided Imagery for Inner Healing, workshop.
Originally trained as a school psychologist and later receiving a doctorate in Holistic Health Sciences, I have combined both my training and my passion to support others to empower themselves to heal and achieve a sense of hope, peace and well-being. In my private practice, I teach the utilization of mind-body techniques, including hypnotherapy and integrative imagery, which are adapted to meet the needs of each patient. I serve as an integrative clinician on the Pediatric Pain Team at UCLA, under the direction of Lonnie Zeltzer, MD, for young people experiencing chronic pain and cancer. I have been the facilitator of the Meditation Group at the Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology for over 14 years now. Typically, the meditations are partially guided with imagery to augment the healing properties of meditation alone and provide enrichment for mind, body and spirit. It is a true blessing to serve in this capacity at the Center, and I treasure the relationships I have had with both patients and members of the staff.
I lost my parents from cancer when I was a teenager at a time when so little was available to help them. I am pleased that now I am able to apply my knowledge and experience to help others who are going through the challenges of cancer. Most members of the group have expressed that they find the sessions on Monday afternoons a respite from the outside world and a place to rejuvenate and renew. My goal is to help facilitate a sense of safety and comfort so members enjoy the inner quiet and peace of going to “another place” in one’s imagination and/or bringing in a sense of healing energy into their bodies.
In my summer workshop this August 4th, I am planning to teach the therapeutic value of balance introduced by the Chakra System and interpreting it for Western lifestyle. I am using the teaching of Anodea Judith, who is considered one of the country’s foremost experts on the chakra theory. The workshop will include the integration of the Chakras into meditation practice, with the support of healing energy, color and light. I will also make my guided Chakra CD’s available for participants to take with them to use on their own if they choose. My hope is that new members come and enjoy the experience with us.
