Evolving Insights into the Rational Treatment of Breast Cancer 2016
About the Lecture
Breast cancer continues to be the leading cancer in women with over 230,000 new cases detected yearly. The diagnosis is inevitably a life-altering, frightening experience for patients. New treatments are being developed at an unprecedented pace and navigating the maze of options available can be overwhelming and difficult for those affected by breast cancer. Women need information in order to be active participants in their care. Dr. Hurvitz helps demystify the complexity by clarifying the basic approach to systemic breast cancer management and shedding light on some important controversies. Clinical trials are a growing resource for women to obtain the latest novel treatments and she outlines some of the trials that are ongoing and the results of recent trials. This information pertains to both systemic chemotherapy and hormonal agents as well as some of the new trials evaluating targeted agents. The goal of this presentation is to help women and their families understand the disease, treatment options and new approaches and how to apply them to the individual patient with breast cancer.
Speaker
Sara Hurvitz, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology at the David Geffen School of Medicine UCLA. As a medical oncologist, and Co-Director of the Santa Monica-UCLA Outpatient Oncology Practice, Dr. Hurvitz has an active practice and specializes in the treatment of women with breast cancer. As Director of the UCLA Breast Cancer Clinical Research Program and Medical Director of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center Clinical Research Unit, she is actively involved in designing and leading multiple national and international clinical trials that are aimed at improving the treatment of breast cancer.
