Head and Neck Cancers: A Multidisciplinary Team for State-of-the-Science Care

Presented by Robert Chin, MD, PhD, Abie Mendelsohn, MD, FACS, Deborah Jean Lee Wong, MD and Carolyn Katzin, MS, CNS

About the Lecture

Head and neck cancers and cancers of the throat used to be diseases seen only in elderly patients but are on the rise in younger and healthier patients. There has been a rise in the number of these cancers, particularly those caused by particular forms of the human papilloma virus which, when found early, are highly treatable. Advances in treatment have focused on preserving function and quality of life. The treatments, however, often require a multi-disciplinary approach using a combination of modalities. Dr. Abie Mendelson will discuss the many advances in robotic surgery. Dr. Chin will discuss radiation treatment and the importance of preserving function. Dr. Wong will discuss the chemotherapeutic agents that help sensitize the tumors to radiation treatments. These treatments, even in their best form, take a toll on the physical well-being of the patient and often require considerable symptom management. Carolyn Katzin, MS, an Integrative Specialist with specialized training in nutrition, addresses how to manage nausea, swallowing, eating and maintenance of body weight. The information presented will assist patients and families in making decisions, understanding treatments and preserving well-being into survivorship.

About the Speakers

Robert Chin, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Clinical Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine and a radiation oncologist at UCLA. He received his BA degree in philosophy from The Johns Hopkins University, his PhD from the Committee on Immunology at the University of Chicago, and MD from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He completed specialty training in Radiation Oncology at Stanford Cancer Institute. At UCLA, Dr. Chin’s clinical interests include clinical protocols focused radiotherapy dose reduction in HPV-associated head and neck cancers, and integration of immunotherapy into radiotherapy. Outside of the clinic, Dr. Chin has a special interest in self-sustaining public health projects, and has worked or studied in South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Cuba. In his spare time, Dr. Chin dotes on his aging motorcycle and works on the next big idea.

Abie Mendelsohn, MD, FACS, Assistant Professor, is the founding Director of the Head and Neck Robotic Surgery Program. Following advanced training in Europe for endoscopic surgery for throat cancer, he has spent the past several years at UCLA building surgical programs focused on minimally invasive access to the head and neck. His active clinical practice and research focus on the continued improvements of function following throat cancer treatment.

Deborah Jean Lee Wong, MD, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Division of Hematology/Oncology has a special interest in head and neck cancers. She has an active practice on the Westwood campus as well as in the UCLA Torrance practice. She is dedicated to improving patient quality of life and caring for the whole patient with cancer.

Carolyn Katzin, MS, CNS, Oncology Specialist Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology sees patients for a highly individualized assessment of nutrition and supplements. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition at University of London’s King’s College and earned a Master of Science degree in Public Health in Nutritional Science from UCLA. She has practiced as a nutritionist for more than 25 years and has written two books on the topic.
