March is Social Work Appreciation Month!

YogaThis month we acknowledge the dedication, service and invaluable contributions made by social workers. Social Work Appreciation Month recognizes the value and importance of social work in improving the lives of patients, families, and the essential role social workers play in uplifting communities.

In honor of Social Work Month, we would like to take a moment to extend our appreciation and deep gratitude to the amazing oncology social workers we have here at the Simms/Mann – UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology. We have a wonderful team of experienced and hardworking social workers, composed of both staff and interns, whom are dedicated to providing the highest quality of service and care.

Oncology social workers are a vital part of the medical care team. They understand the impact of cancer on each individual and can provide a range of services to patients and families that include psychosocial support, counseling, education, referrals, and facilitating support groups. When receiving news of a cancer diagnosis, many patients or families question how they’ll be able to manage current and new responsibilities. Such responsibilities may include job related duties, caring for children, caring for themselves, staying on top of medications, managing treatment, medical appointments, and staying on top of finances. A social worker can give essential guidance to these families and patients through providing them with a variety of helpful resources and support. In addition to this, they can arrange meetings between family members and the medical care team about what kind of support and assistance a patient with cancer will need while going through the treatment process. They possess the skills and capabilities to provide patients and families with valuable tools necessary to get them through difficult periods within their lives.

This month we extend our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation towards social workers everywhere! For their dedication to this profound service and their continued efforts to make a difference in the lives of others!
